august16th: hey, i was wondering what words of advice would you give about succeeding in the graphic and interactive communications major at ringling? i'm a freshman, at ringling, this year. - alex

Oh, that’s so wonderful! You’re in for a really exciting year.

Being a GIC major means you’re going to be doing a whole lot of things, spanning across every media. So I would say, learn as much as you can. Read everything. Read blogs and articles and books, but not just about design, about anything and everything that interests you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Take as many risks as you can. Take advantage of the technology and facilities you have, because you won’t find their match in the real world. Listen to your professors, but don’t take their word as law. Experiment. Don’t feel confined by the computer - try working with real materials and getting away from a screen every once in a while.

But most importantly: Have fun. And wear sunscreen.
